  polyphonic spree
2003 Undoubtedly the year of James Blunt, who turned up unable to get a record deal, performed in front of 25 people and impressed Linda Perry, the former frontwoman with 4 Non Blondes who had written for Christina Aguilera, Pink and Gwen Stefani and was launching her own label, Custard. "I was putting my guitar away at the end of the gig," recalls Blunt, "and Linda just came up to me and said: 'I want to sign you. Choose your producer, you have complete control. ' Then we just went and got drunk. " Three years and four million album sales later, James Blunt became the first UK artist since Elton John in 1998 to have a No 1 single in America. 2004 Willie Mason was spotted at the festival by Zane Lowe in 2004, and returned the following year with a major label deal and Top 40 album and single under his belt. 2005 KT Tunstall played to 15 people; in 2006 she filled the Ritz. British "chav" icon Lady Sovereign also wowed the States after performing there in 2005: she was billed as the next Eminem and signed to Jay-Z's label last year. 2006 The Arctic Monkeys were such a hit that singer Alex Turner was swamped by too many girls and his minder had to hold them back.
